U.S. revokes China Telecom’s license to operate in the U.S. Ministry of Commerce responds

[Communication Industry Network News] (Reporter Zhao Yan) On October 28, the Ministry of Commerce held a press conference. At the meeting, in response to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC)’s decision to cancel the license for Chinese telecommunications companies to operate in the United States, Shu Jueting, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, responded that the US’s move to generalize the concept of national security and abuse of national power is lack of factual basis. Under the circumstances, the Chinese side maliciously suppresses Chinese companies, violates market principles, and undermines the atmosphere of cooperation between the two sides. China expresses serious concern about this.

Shu Jueting pointed out that the Chinese economic and trade team has lodged solemn representations with the US in this regard. The United States should immediately correct its wrongdoings and provide a fair, open, just, and non-discriminatory business environment for companies investing and operating in the United States. China will continue to take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.

According to Reuters and other media reports, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted on the 26th local time to revoke the authorization of China Telecom Americas to operate in the United States. According to reports, the US Federal Communications Commission claimed that China Telecom was “used, influenced and controlled by the Chinese government, and it is very likely that it would be forced to comply with the requirements of the Chinese government without accepting adequate legal procedures for independent judicial supervision.” U.S. regulators further mentioned the so-called “significant risks” to the “national security and law enforcement” of the United States.

According to Reuters, the FCC’s decision means that China Telecom Americas must stop its services in the United States within 60 days from now, and China Telecom has previously been authorized to provide telecom services in the United States for nearly 20 years.
